“The teacher understands how children learn and develop, and can provide learning opportunities that support a child’s intellectual, social, and personal development.”
How students learn is just as important as what they learn. Students should be taught to be active seekers of knowledge. Students should learn through engaged learning, problem solving, communication collaboration, seeking connections and technology. It is important for teachers to understand how children learn in order to maximize the success of the student.
ARTIFACT: For a Literacy final, I wrote 2 papers in response to these questions:
How do you teach comprehension? What is your role as the teacher? There are seven strategies for constructing meaning that your students need to develop as they become independent readers. Name and define these seven strategies. Then choose one of these strategies and describe a ” Think Aloud” activity that you would use with your students. Identify a book or story to use as an example. Include a dialogue and write it exactly as you would say it in your classroom.
You are a fourth grade teacher just beginning a unit on “The Rainforest”. How would you integrate vocabulary instruction for this unit into your classroom program? Identify and discuss the three elements needed for effective vocabulary development, according to Cooper. Describe at least two examples of activities you would include related to each element and explain why you chose each. Also, explain at least two additional strategies you would include to support ELL students.
