Standard #3: Diverse Learners

”The teacher understands how students differ in their approaches to learning and creates instructional opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners.”

From my studies at SUNY Oswego, I have gained a great understanding of working with diverse learners. I understand that not all children learn at the same speed or learn with the same instructional material.  It is important for the teacher to use a variety of instructional strategies and assessments to be able to ensure the success of each child in the classroom.  Some instructional strategies that I would use in my classroom are:

  1. Think pair share
  2. read alouds
  3. round robin
  4. literacy circles
  5. readers theater
  6. small group discussion

It is important for the teacher to also use multiple assessment strategies.  This gives the student an opportunity to show what he/she has learned through alternative assessments.  Not all students are outstanding test takers so by providing an alternative for the students to exhibit what he/she has learned is crucial.  Some alternate assessmnet strategies that I would use in my classroom are:

  1. retellings
  2. plays
  3. book boxes
  4. posters
  5. portfolios
  6. journals
  7. presentations
  8. group work
  9. debates

ARTIFACT: I interviewed a parent of a child who is identified as having disability

For this project I interviewed a mother of a five year old boy with Autism then compared her experiences pertaining to her son’s disability with articles I researched.  The articles I researched are “Perceptions of Parents of Students with Autism Towards the IEP meeting: A Case Study of one Family Support Group Chapter” by Wade W. Fish, “Autism from the Inside” by Temple Grandin, “Mighty Mike” by Laura Apel, and “Being Autistic Is Part of Who I Am” by Matt Ward and Nancy Alar.    For the interview mom was very eager and willing to participate and the information she told me about her son’s disability and her experiences with the school system were very helpful to me because of my desire to be an educator.  I am appreciative of this experience as it has given me a better understanding of working with children with disabilities and their families and how it has shaped my philosophy of teaching. Interview with a parent of a child with a disability CLICK HERE
