Standard #5: Motivation and Management

“The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.”

Teachers should create a safe, nurturing, positive learning environment for the students.  It is the duty of the teacher to create a harmonious setting through instructional strategies, techniques, classroom rules and a discipline policy.

ARTIFACT: Read Alouds are a good resource for teachers to use to get children involved and to actively participate. Reading Aloud to a class has many benefits.  The students become quiet, they get to hear good literature, and the students can get through an entire book.  To further engage the children, the teacher can stop to ask questions, make predictions, and allow the students to share their favorite part of the book.  CLICK HERE to view a sample read aloud.

ARTIFACT: I wrote a research paper on responses to bullying

As a future educator it is important for me to understand and pay attention to issues that impact a school system to maximize students’ success.  One issue that I am particularly interested in is Bullying in the classroom.  I am interested in this topic because of incidents that I have witnessed both in my practicum placements and as a parent of an eight year old child.  I have witnessed children in the Elementary schools belittle, put down and manipulate other students in order to gain something.  Many of these incidents go unnoticed or are ignored for several reasons.  One reason is that people think it is just kids’ play and another reason is that some people don’t want to be bothered with it.  I have witnessed teachers and parents address the issue by yelling at the children or telling the children to stop tattling.  There are better ways to deal with bullying including peer mediation, reading, writing or role playing.  The specific issue that I will explore in this paper is ‘how can educators teach peaceful responses to bullying?’  I have researched bullying and have identified that it is a problem in the schools and I have also identified peaceful strategies in response to bullying and have examined their effectiveness.Click Here to read more of this research paper.
